מרדכי אבניאל, ישראלי, יליד האימפריה הרוסית, 1990-1910.
מרדכי אבניאל נולד בעיירה פריצ'י, שבפלך גומל ברוסיה הלבנה למשפחה דתית. סבו היה רב וראש ישיבה שבה למד גם אבניאל. בנעוריו למד בבית הספר לאמנות ביקטרינבורג ועסק בפעילות ציונית. בשנת 1920 אף היה היה ציר מטעם יקטרינבורג בועידה הציונית במוסקבה. בשנת 1921 עלה לארץ ישראל במסגרת תנועת "החלוץ" ושימש כחקלאי בפתח תקוה. בשנת 1923 התמנה למנהל המחלקה לפיסול זעיר ב"בצלאל". במהלך המחצית השנייה של שנות העשרים שימש כעיתונאי בעיתונים "דואר היום", "העם" ו"הירדן", ובשנת 1932 סיים לימודי משפטים באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים.
בשנת 1934 עבר לחיפה, שם פעל כעורך דין עד לראשית שנות החמישים ואחר כך כחבר מועצת העיר מטעם תנועת החרות. בנוסף כיהן בתפקידים ציבוריים אמנותיים. ביניהם יו"ר מועצת המוזיאונים בחיפה, נשיא המועצה של אגודת הציירים והפסלים בישראל וחבר המועצה לתרבות ואמנות במשרד החינוך ועוד. בנוסף למגוריו בחיפה החזיק סטודיו בקריית האמנים בצפת.
בשנות העשרים יצר אבניאל תבליטים ופיסול זעיר בעץ ובשנהב, אולם הוא מוכר בעיקר בציורי האקוורל שליצר, המתארים את נופי ארץ ישראל. בעבודותיו המאוחרות בולטת הנטייה להפשטה של הדימוי.
