This article condemning the Czar was published by Rabbi Hirsch upon the death of the Czar. Czar Nicholas was infamous for his despotic rule specifically against the Jews, implementing about 600 decrees against them in his 30 years of rule, one of which was the famous Cantonist Decree.

Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch (1808-1888) of Frankfurt am Main was a leader of Ashkenazic Jewry who fought zealously against the Reform Movement and Jewish assimilation. His teachings became a cornerstone of Torah education for Ashkenazic Jewry.
