"I, Ephraim your Servant" – Original Draft written by Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margolis to Rabbinical Leaders of Kushta

A handwritten letter of recommendation written by Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margolis of Brody. The recommendation is for Rabbi Yehuda Leibush, who had served as the Rabbi of Stanov and now in his older years wished to move Eretz Yisrael.

This autograph letter was written in Brody in 1811 with deletions and additions. The letter itself was probably not sent but rather given to a scribe to rewrite in sephardic script (as the rabbinical leaders of Kushta were not fluent Ashkenazic script).

The letter begins with the words, "From me, Ephraim your servant,"

The signature on the bottom margin was added by hand on a later date.

Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margolis (1762 - 1828), author of Beis Ephraim, Mateh Ephraim and other sefarim as well, was from the great Acharonim. While he never served as a rabbi, he was a well-known Halachic posek and greatly admired by the rabbinical leaders of his generation.
