"I AM CERTAIN THAT THE MERIT OF ALL THOSE WHO ASSIST ME WILL STAND BY THEM FOREVER" – A Letter from Rabbi Menachem Mendel Halberstam of Stropkov
A letter from Rabbi Menachem Mendel Halberstam of Stropkov requesting financial assistance in marrying off his son.
Autograph letter and signature written in Stropkov, 1922, He writes: "It is against my nature to come with letters of request to America. But what can I do… (I have come) to collect money from people who have heard of the Admorim of Shinowa and Sanz, and I am certain that the merit of all those who assist me will forever stand by them, as my son is an outstanding Torah scholar…"
He signs off with wishes for "Speedy salvation and success and life and health and everything good."
Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Stropkov (1873 - 1954) was the son of Rabbi Shalom of Stropkov, grandson of Rabbi Yechezkel Shraga of Shinowa and great-grandson of Rabbi Chaim Halberstam of Sanz. He was a great tzaddik and a renown miracle worker. He arrived in America in 1947 where he was looked upon as one of the last remaining remnants of the past generation’s leaders. He was greatly respected by all of the admorim of America and the great admorim of Satmar and Skvere sat by his bedside as his soul departed this world.
