Important Letter from Rabbi Shmaryahu Yosef Karelitz, Nephew of the Author of Chazon Ish

Important letter handwritten and signed by Rabbi Shmaryahu Yosef Karelitz.

The letter is addressed to the editorial board of the 'HaAtid' newspaper. In it, he expresses hope that the 'Agudat Yisrael''s victory in the election will come about following the article he wrote for the newspaper: 'I would ask that you find a place for the attached article ... it could be that through this article matters will move and we will be able to, B"EH, win the election ... you have permission to correct the mistakes, and adapt the wording in places, but not the content. I would request that you don't sign my name explicitly, just as I have signed the article - S. Y. K.. Thank you in advance, with the hope that you print this, as it is not for my own sake that I make this request, but for the sake of Agudat Yisrael ...' His signature is in the margin of the letter.

Letters in his handwriting are almost nonexistent, as he hardly wrote, especially on political topics.

The gaon Rabbi Shmaryahu Karelitz [1918 - 2001] was among the founders of Kollel Chazon Ish in Bnei Brak, the first to stand at its head after being requested to do so by the Chazon Ish. In his youth he learned in Yeshivat Novhardok in Pinsk, with Rabbi Shmuel Weintraub and with his uncle Rabbi Yisrael Yaakov Kanievsky - the 'Steipler,' as well as in Yeshivat Kennesset Beit Yitzchak in Kaminetz, with Reb Baruch Ber. He learned in Klezk as well, receiving the Torah of Rabbi Aharon Kotler. On the eve of the Second World War, he immigrated to Palestine with his family and learned in the Lomza yeshiva in Petach Tikva. In 1956 he went to many countries on rabbinic missions. His rabbinic period in the diaspora lasted a total of 45 years.
