Emissary's (Shadar) Letter by the Jerusalem Kollelot - Signatures of Rabbi Yom Tov Algazi and the Rabbis of His Beit Din: His Son-in-Law Rabbi Mordechai Yosef Meyuchas; Rabbi Yitzchak Kovo; Rabbi Yisrael Ya'akov Burla and Rabbi Chaim Mordechai Soranga - 1892
Emissary's (Shadar) Letter, Jerusalem 1892. Signed by six of the rabbis of the Sephardic community of Jerusalem, the Kabbalists: Rabbi Yom Tov Algazi, Rabbi Mordechai Yosef Meyuchas; Rabbi Yitzchak Kovo; Rabbi Yisrael Ya'akov Burla, Rabbi Chaim Mordechai Soranga and an additional signature which is torn in the middle.
The signatures of all the above Kabbalists are extremely rare and some of them have never appeared in auctions!
In the letter, the rabbis describe the great poverty of the city and state that "the money [of the donations] will not be enough even for a third or fourth, due to the vast expenses". The emissaries that were sent were Rabbi Raphael Yosef Chaim Benvenisti (who wrote Derashot and Responsa that have still not been printed) and Rabbi Yehuda [Raphael] Uziel, who served as a Dayan of the Beit Din of Rabbi Moshe Ayash and as the deputy Rishon Le'Zion.
The rabbis who signed the letter:
The kabbalist Rabbi Yom Tov Algazi (1727 - 1802)
Rabbi Yom Tov Algazi was born in Jerusalem to his father Rabbi Israel Jacob Algazi, who was Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem. He studied Torah with his father and with Rabbi Yonah Navon author of "Nechepa Ba'Kesef". In 1758 he was already one of the scholars of the "Neveh Shalom" Yeshiva that was established by his father. He was also a member of the "Ahavat Shalom" Society, which was headed by his father and the Divine kabbalist Rabbi Shalom Sharabi (the Rashash). During the years 1770-1775, Rabbi Yom Tov was sent as an emissary together with Rabbi Ya'akov Chazak. In 1777, he returned to Jerusalem. A short while afterwards, he became the Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem. After Rabbi Shalom Sharabi's death, he replaced him as the head of the "Beit El" Yeshiva for Kabbalists. Then he was also appointed the "Rishon Le'Zion". He died in Jerusalem when he was seventy five years old.
His compositions: "Hilchot Yom Tov", "Simchat Yom Tov" Responsa, "Kedushat Yom Tov", "Yom Tov De'Rabanan".
He signed many emissary's letters and approbated many books by the rabbis of Jerusalem. During his mission as an emissary in Europe, he reached Frankfurt, where he met the Chatam Sofer, who later approbated his book "Hilchot Yom Tov" and praises him at length.
Rabbi Yisrael Ya'akov Burla (died in 1797)
Rabbi Yisrael Ya'akov Burla was Av Beit Din in Jerusalem and one of its foremost Torah scholars.
In his youth, he studied at the "Neveh Shalom" Yeshiva of Jerusalem. Later, he served as a Dayan of the Beit Din of Rabbi Yom Tov Algazi and for a short while even served as the Rosh Av Beit Din. He died in 1797 and was buried on the Mount of Olives.
Rabbi Moshe Mordechai Meyuchas (1738-1805)
Meyuchas was born in Jerusalem to his father Rabbi Raphael Meyuchas author of 'Pri Ha'Adamah'. He studied at the "Beit Ya'akov" Beit Midrash and already as a youth wrote Torah Novellae and Responsa. After the death of his father-in-law, Rabbi Yom Tov Algazi, he replaced him as Rosh Av Beit Din of Jerusalem and as the Rishon Le'Zion.
He is the author of Sha’ar Ha'Mayim (Salonika, 1768,) Birkot Ha'Mayim (Salonika, 1789,) and Mayim Sha'al (Salonika 1799.)
Rabbi Yitzchak Kovo (the first) (1748-1807)
One of the rabbis of Salonika who immigrated to Jerusalem with his father Rabbi Chizkiya Yosef. He was the disciple of Rabbi Raphael Meyuchas, author of 'Pri Ha'Adamah'. He served as a Dayan of the Beit Din of Rabbi Yom Tov Algazi. He signed regulations, approbations, emissary's letter and many other documents.
Rabbi Chaim Mordechai Soranga (died in 1799)
The disciple of the Chida. Author of the book "Pi Shenayim" (Salonika, 1806) together with his friend Rabbo Yonah Navon. Served as Av Beit Din of Jerusalem. Was sent as an emissary in 1774. In 1797 he became the head of the "Marpeh La'Nefesh" Yeshiva.
