The Rebbe Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Alter of Gur (1866-1948) was the eldest son of the Rebbe author of 'Sefat Emet'. For 43 years he served as the Rebbe of Gur and as one of the leaders of the whole Haredi community. The number of his Hassidim before the Holocaust was close to a hundred thousamd! The Rebbe was one of the founders of Agudat Yisrael and headed the Mo'etzet Gedolei Ha'Torah of the movement. His activities during the long years he served as a Rebbe shaped the character of the complete Haredi community. He survived the Holocaust and immigrated to Jerusalem, where he reestablished the Gur Hassidism with its institutions and yeshivas.
