"Cheshek Shlomo" commentary on Tractate Yevamot by Shlomo Friedlander - the forger of the Yerushalmi Kadshim
Cheshek Shlomo - commentary on the Yerushalmi - Yevamot, by Shlomo Yehuda Friedlander, the forger of the Yerushalmi on Kadshim. Seini, 1905, Yaakov Weider press.
Shlomo Yehuda Friedlander [1860-1924] is infamous for his forged Yerushalmi. He sophisticatedly copied excerpts from the Yerushalmi Kadshim that are quoted in the books of Rishonim and passages from other Sedarim and then announced that he had found an antiquated manuscript of the Yerushalmi. Before this scandal, Friedlander worked on creating an aura of respectability and trust amongst the rabbis and scholars. He wrote this commentary on the Yerushalmi Tractate Yevamot in 1905, in order to earn himself the repuation as a genius and expert in the Yerushalmi Talmud.
At the start of his commentary, Friedlander included various approbations under the title "Due to printing expenses...here is only one percent...," an attempt to create the impression that he had tens of other approbations that were not printed. The printed approbations includes one from Rabbi Chaim Yosef Dovber HaLevi Soloveitchik, the Aderet, author of Sdei Chemed and others. It concludes with enthusiastic words by the printer regardng: "The great genius, the author, who made this wonderous, quality work..." with 50 names of people who agreed, without printing their approbations in full.
