'Süss the Jew' was a famous propaganda film directed by Veit Harlan which was ordered by the Nazi Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels and was shown in Germany in 1940. The film is based on the life story of the Jewish banker Joseph Süss Oppenheimer, who lived in the 18th century and became famous due to his success in leaving the ghetto and entering the royal court. Yet, in the end, he was executed. In 1925, the novel "'Süss the Jew" by Leon Feuchtwanger was published and received worldwide publicity.
Harlan's film used an anti-Semite interpretation of the story in order to warn the Arians against the assimilating Jew. The film shows Oppenheimer's deceptions and manipulations in addition to his attempts to court an engaged German girl. Some claim that the film had much influence on shaping the German public opinion and laid the foundations for the destruction of the Jewish nation.
