As is customary in these works, several attempts are made to get the needed result. We have three suggestions which are three stages to the maturation of the issue in the artist's heart. This work was very significant for Aryeh Moskowitz. The boy who saw his family and all his neighbors perish in the terrible valley of death, and thanks to his artistic talent was saved, painting the commandment: Remember!
Initially, as he says, he painted the United States hand presses to ours, because it was the United States that fought against the Nazis and eventually led to their defeat, and we are grateful to it. But then he decided to remove it, because his internal feelings led him to paint the Holocaust as emphasizing the apartness of Jews, of being alone at that stage in history. The United States was not focused in saving Jews either. More than anything, the verse "are a people that dwells alone" was relevant.
Proposals for the symbol of Yad Vashem:
a. Olive leaves with an Israeli flag flying above. Under the olive leaves the word "Remember", beneath it a Star of David in the center of a wire fence. Olive leaves growing out of the Star of David.
b. That same barbed wire Star of David at its center. In this sketch the olive leaves rise out from the ends of the fence so the view strongly reminds one of the symbol of the state. But in the middle, instead of a large Menorah, railroad tracks leading to a small Menorah. There, at the connection between the rails and the Menorah, two hands shaking each other, the right wearing an American flag and left the flag of Israel.
c. Very similar to the previous one, but without the hands of the United States and Israel. Menorah on the right of the symbol of the state, and on the left the Yad Vashem icon. This sketch was ultimately adopted as the symbol.
Very good condition.
