TWO CALENDARS – 1814-1815
Two calendars from the same series which were printed in Tarnopol, 1814 and 1815.
On the cover the following is inscribed: “A calendar for the year 1814 (and on the second one 1815), five thousand years since the creation of the world according to the Jewish people, with a Roman and Christian calendar, and a Greek calendar, with their holidays, and some additional wonderful things… there is also a calendar for the reader to help soothe his soul…” In 1815, the calendar had received a name and it was called “A faithful timeline for 1815”.
As was customary for calendars of the time, the book contains many diverse and interesting essays. It is noteworthy to mention two special traits of this calendar: first, besides the date, there is also a chart of all the Halachot and customs for relevant for each specific time of the year: Rosh Hodesh Elul, the Eve of Rosh Hashanah, Rosh Hashanah, etc., in a manner which is similar to the “Calendar of Eretz Yisrael” by Rabbi Yechiel Michel Toktzhinsky, which was established approximately 30 years later. The style of writing and the print are very similar. An interesting question is whether Rabbi Toktzhinsky was familiar with this calendar. Likewise, the calendar bears witness to some interesting customs which were practiced in the synagogues and which are not practiced today.
Secondly, at the end of the calendar are challenging puzzles, with their solution printed in the calendar for the subsequent year.
Excellent condition.
