Exodus is an American film from 1960, based on the novel “Exodus” by Leon Uris. It captures the Ha’apala (illegal immigration) period and Zionist redemption in the land of Israel. The name comes from the biblical book bearing the same name, which is also the name of the immigrants’ ship depicted in the film. Most of it was shot in Israel and Israeli actors, among them Dan Ben-Amotz, Shmulik Segal, and Esther Opharim, took part in it.
The film was a major hit, in part because of lead star Paul Newman, and became an “ambassador” of Israel around the world.
The first part of the film depicts the tale of the immigrants’ ship “Exodus”, which housed Holocaust survivors. The second part narrates the tale of the Yishuv in the land of Israel against the British, the UN decision 181 for ending the British mandate in Palestine and partitioning plan for the land, and the establishment of the State of Israel and War of Independence.
For tens of millions worldwide, the book and movie became the “faithful ambassador” of the Jewish and Zionist “truth” and the rebirth of the Jewish People in their land.
