Letter from the Wonder-Worker Rabbi Moshe Sofer, Av Beit Din of Tiszafüred

"To immediately be inscribed and sealed in the book of the righteous" (some of the blessings in the letter)

Family letter of greetings with wishes for a good new year, handwritten and signed by the renowned wonder-worker, the gaon and tzaddik Rabbi Moshe Sofer,  av beit din of Tiszafüred, beloved disciple of the Ktav Sofer and the first person to be named after the Chata"m Sofer. Written to one of his illustrious brothers. Elul, 1901.

The letter primarily deals, as expected, with Torah thoughts, befitting the two geonim from the renowned Sofer family (the second-most prominent family in Hungary after the dynasty of the Chata"m Sofer), but it also deals with interesting family topics. Written at the beginning of the letter: "I received your letter and I saw that the Admo"r, the gaon ... [his uncle, the gaon and tzaddik Rabbi Eliezer Zussman Sofer, author of Yalkut Eliezer and Damesek Eliezer] said that I should not come to visit him, as he does not know how long he will be delayed there." Later on in the letter, it speaks of copying the Torah novellae by his father, Rabbi Ya'akov Shalom,  av beit din of Toppolstan, and copying his novellae on the topic "there is no agent for a transgression." The end of the letter addresses a family shidduch.

Both at the beginning and end of the letter here are blessings and warm wishes to be inscribed and sealed for the good "To immediately be inscribed and sealed in the book of the righteous" in the very hand of one of the unique wonder-workers of Hungary (it was traditional there that anyone who had his ritual circumcision performed on Rabbi Moshe Sofer's lap would not die of the childhood diseases common at the time.)

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the gaon and tzaddik Rabbi Moshe Sofer.
