Responsa Parach Matteh Aharon. Amsterdam, 1703. First Edition. Glosses
Part one: [3], 249 leaves. Part two: [1], 168 leaves. 30x20 cm.
The book Parach Matteh Aharon, responsa, parts 1-2 [in two volumes] by Rabbi Aharon HaCohen Perachya [author of Bigdei Kehuna]. First edition.
Illustrated title pages for both parts with illustrations of Aharon the Priest and symbols of priesthood as a hint to the name of the author, who was the scion of a pedigreed priestly rabbinic family who served as Chief Rabbi of Salonika from 1689 until his death in 1697.
These two title pages became known as the most beautiful title pages of all title pages of printed books, and many researchers have studied them. On the top part of the title page is the Ark of the Covenant, on the sides are figures of priests in full priestly clothing, and at the bottom their hands are spread out like when blessing the people, and an illustration of washing the priest's hands. Between the two illustrations at the bottom of the page is an illustration of the author holding the Tablets of the Covenant and turning towards the sea, a hint to the port city where he served as Rabbi - Salonika. Handwritten ancient glosses from the time of printing in part one.
On the page after the title page of part two is an inscription in the form of a poem that no-one should dare steal the book, signed with the signature the small one Elazar Zussya son of Rabbi Yisrael Segal. Stamps of the censor.
New, pretty binding. Wear in the margins of the last leaf of part two.
Two pleasant volumes in very fine condition.
