Seder L'Yamim Noraim - Amsterdam 1738. First, Rare Edition out of 600 Copies Printed
[2] 114 leaves, and see below.
Seder L'Yamim Noraim [Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur] according to the customs of the holy congregation of Carpentras, published by Rabbi Avraham Montel, printed in Amsterdam in the Hertz Levi Rofeh printing press in 1738. At the beginning of the Machzor are approbations from the Rabbis and Dayanim of Carpentras. On the endpaper are ownership inscriptions and dedications from the 18th century.
Rabbi Avraham ben Shmuel de Montelez [Montel] printed only 600 copies of this machzor with great difficulty and suffering. During the printing, leaves were added to some copies in different places of the machzor. There are copies which many leaves were added to, copies to which only a few were added, and there are copies which were left unchanged [refer to S. Schwarzfuchs, Tza'rat Hadpasat HaSefarim, Alei Sefer 6-7 1979, pages 145-1477]. Before us is one copy which survived from those 600 copies which were printed in the first edition and it has leaves which were added into it during the printing in the following places: one leaf between pages 14 and 15 [chapters of Tehillim], one leaf between pages 17 and 18, six leaves between pages 71 and 72 [pizmonim and excerpts from the Shacharit prayer of Rosh Hashana]. Before us is a very rare copy, live historical evidence to the interesting events of the printing of the first edition of the machzor.
On pages 85-88 are a number of worming holes with slight lack of text.
Original ancient leather binding.
Fine-moderate condition.
