Historic Document: Summons to Dayanim of the Beit Din in Jerusalem to the British Mandate Headquarters

Handwritten summons on behalf of British Colonel Norman Bentwich, who served as a judicial advisor of the British Mandate, to the members of the Beit Din: Rabbi Moshe Nachum Wallenstein, Rabbi Yitzchak Frankel and Rabbi Mordechai Leib Rubin. Reason for the summons: Interview regarding occupied enemy territory. July, 1919.

Norman Bentwich was a Jewish British jurist who served as the Judicial Officer of the British Mandate in the Land of Israel. Bentwich arrived in Jerusalem immediately following its conquest, and he was appointed Judicial Officer of the British military government. In November, 1929, on the way to a midday break, one of the Arab workers shot him with a gun in the police commander's office, in an attempt to assassinate him. Bentwich was wounded in his thigh, however, he did survive.
