Letter by the Gabai and presidents of the Diskin orphanage, signed by the Rav of Jerusalem the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld. Jerusalem, [1929].


Letter to the "Orphans Fund of Agudas Yisroel in Switzerland" containing confirmation of and gratitude for a donation for supporting two orphans, by the management of the Diskin orphanage, with the handwritten signature of Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld. Jerusalem, Kislev [1929]. 


[1] leaf, official stationery with an illustration of the front of the orphanage. 31 cm. Stamp of the Diskin orphanage, with the signatures of the three Gabaim of the orphanage: two handwritten signatures and one stamped signature, and with two signatures of the presidents of the orphanage: the handwritten signatures of Rabbi Sonnenfeld and the stamped signature of Rabbi Eliyahu Klatzkin. 


Mara DeAra DeYisroel Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld (1848-1932) the Rav og HaEdah HaChareidis and Agudas Yisroel of Jerusalem. Gedol Hador of the recent generation. A disciple of Maran the Kesav Sofer of Pressburg and Rabbi Avraham Shag. Immigrated to Jerusalem and became close to Rabbi Yehoshua Leib Diskin. Eventually, he succeeded him, leading the Chareidi Jews of Eretz Yisroel and serving as the president of the Diskin orphanage, the head of Kollel Shomrei HaChomos and the chief Gabau of the Chevra Kadisha Haklali of Jerusalem. 


The Diskin orphanage was founded in 1880 in the Old City of Jerusalem by the Saraf of Brisk, the Maharil Diskin. Later, the orphanage moved to HaNevi'im St. and in 1927, to a large and impressive building in the Givat Shaul neighborhood. During the 1929 Palestine Riots, the orphanage was attacked several times by rioters, yet their attacks failed.
