Gunthermann "Poor Pete" Comical Automaton 1910
Don't go stealing watermelons.....As this little boy has found out the hard way.This comical lithographed tinplate Automaton features a boy (catalogued as "Poor Pete") eating a watermelon which it's presumed he's just stolen being bitten on his rear by a chasing dog.It was made in 1910 by the Brandenburg based toy firm of Gunthermann and features a strong clockwork/wind-up mechanism that mimics the boy running away from the dog to no avail.This toy reflects society's racial attitude at the time.
