A large bronze coin of Mattathias Antigonus.

Obv.: Double cornucopia; around and between, paleo-Hebrew inscription: Mattathias the High Priest and the council of the Jews. Rev.: Wreath of ivy leaves surrounded by Greek inscription [BACIɅEΩΣ] [ANTI]ΓONOY ('of king Antigonus'); the inscription is turning inwards.

The coins of Antigonus were struck by an innovative minting process which makes them unique. This coin is a fine illustration of this in that the two halves of the mould are not flush.

37-40 B.C.E. 14.5 grams, 25 mm, axis 7. For similar examples cf. Ya'akov Meshorer, A Treasury of Jewish Coins (New York 2001), pl. 42, no. 36 with its variants.
