A bronze coin (fractional prutah) of Alexander Jannaeus –with features that illuminate the manufacturing and minting process.

Obv.: Anchor surrounded by Greek inscription ('of King Alexander'). Rev.: star.

All the features that a coin present enable us to determine the exact identity of the coin and also whether it is genuine or not. Such features are the language, the legend, the letter forms, iconography, striations from the striking and any other feature however small it may be. The following example of the smallest prutah from the Second Temple Period presents another aspect of the coin which facilitates a clearer understanding of the production process, whereby the molten bronze is poured into a mould strips of cast bronze connecting the planchets. Such a mould was discovered in David’s Tower in Jerusalem.
