A silver Tetradrachm in the name of Alexander III 'the Great' (336-323 B.C.E.).

Obv.: Head of Herakles facing right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev.: Zeus seated left on throne, holding eagle and sceptre. On right, Greek inscription AΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ ΘΕΟΔΟΤΟC ('of Alexander gift of God'). On left, jug below.

16.38 grams 3.5cm. diam; axis 12.00.


This coin is part of an extensive series of posthumous coins struck in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BCE, an illustration of the wide popularity and reverence of Alexander.
