"Longevity and Ripe Old Age" Blessing of the "Even HaEzel" in the Midst of Purim Day

Lengthy and interesting letter, handwritten entirely (14 lines) and signed and with th esamp of the gaon Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer Av Beit Din of Slutzk and author of 'Even HaEzel' to the president of the Zionist organization Mr. Yehoshua Farbstein. Jerusalem, Purim D;Prazim, [1945].

Beyond the most interesting content of the letter, as follows, before us is the rare blessing of the gaon Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer, Gedol Hador, the disciple of Torah giants and the rabbi of leading rabbis in recent generations whose book 'Even HaEzel' is considered in yeshiva halls important as the books of the 'Ketzot' and the 'Netivot'. In the midst of Purim day - the most capable day in the year, the day on which it was said "anyone who begs is given" - all that he wishes for, the author of the Even HaEzel blesses the wondrous blessing that all hope for: "Longevity and ripe old age". Awesome and sacred!

In his letter to the president of the Zionist Organization, which was written as said in the midst of Purim day, the 'Even HaEzel' ask for help for an Avrech and Torah scholar who has a sick son and needs assistance. It is not surprising that Rabbi Isser Zalman is occupied on this important day with writing letters of request for help - this was the custom of Torah giants before him, since there is not difference between the Mitzvah of Gemilut Chassadim and the other Mitzvahs of the day. What is interesting is that the addressee, Mr. Farbstein, was far, as far as the east is from the west, in his opinions and religious devotion from Rabbi Isser Zalman's zealous opinion (see enclosed pictures). Nevertheless, when the issue at hand was helping the needy, the author of the Even HaEzel bestows titles upon him as if he were at least the Chief Rabbi: "The honorable rabbi renowned industrious gaon ... our teacher Rabbi Yehoshua Heschel Farbstein". (Rabbi Isser Zalman probably laughed up his sleeve while writing these superlatives and thought to himself that they are suitable for Purim, yet as the Sages have said "no one loathes hearing praises even farfetched ones"...)

See Hebrew catalog text for brief biographies of Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer and Yehoshua Heschel Farbstein.
