'Chiddushei Chatam Sofer' with a Stamp and Gloss by his Disciple, the Admo"r of Nonash, Rabbi Yisrael Ephraim Fischel Sofer Schreiber

Chiddushei Chata"m Sofer al Masechet Shabbat by the leading gaon, Rabbi Moshe Sofer. Vienna, 1889. First edition. Personal copy that belonged to the Chata"m Sofer's disciple, the Admo"r of Nonash, Rabbi Yisrael Ephraim Fischel Sofer. Stamps and an interesting gloss in his hand.

The title page bears three owners' stamps of Rabbi Yisrael Ephraim Fischel [Sofer] Schreiber, av beit din of Nonash, and a stamp from his son-in-law, Rabbi Ben Tziyon Halperin (Halpert), who succeeded him in the Nonash rabbinate.

There is an interesting gloss on leaf 6 handwritten by Rabbi Yisrael Ephraim Fischel, a gloss that combines the wondrous genius of the Chatam Sofer's study hall with Chassidic emotion. The Admo"r of Nonash explains his teacher's words in complex topics of ritual purity that appear in Tractate Shabbat, according to what the Chatam Sofer said in the sermon he gave on Shabbat HaGadol on the verse in Shir HaShirim "Yishakeini MiNeshikot Pihu, " and he derives a new halachah from it.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the Admo"r Rabbi Yisrael Ephraim Fischel Sofer Schreiber and Rabbi Ben Tziyon Halprin-Halpert.
