The First Tikkun Leil Shavuot Ever! Venice, 1648. Extremely Rare

"Service for Recital and Rectification for the night of the Shavuot Holiday and Hoshana Rabba ... Mixed with Tana"ch, Mishnah, Halachot and Haggadot." Venice, Vinderamin Press, 1648. Extremely important and rare work. To the best of our knowledge, it has not been put up for auction in the last several decades.

The first edition ever of Tikkun Leil Shavuot! Before this edition, there were small 'Tikkunim' (consisting of one or two leaves), printed only with instructions as to what must be recited for Tikkun Leil Shavuot, and scholars would study from books of Tana"ch and Mishnah and skip through as needed. This is the first time that the Tikkun was printed in full as a work in its own right.

On the first page, in the introduction: "It is a sacred Jewish custom to study on the nights of Shavuot and Hoshana Rabba; to read in Torah, Nevi'im, Mishnah and Gemara, Aggadah and Kabbalistic books ... and although there are many customs, almost all are like those of the two great luminaries, the Rama"k and the Ar"i ..." The printers write about these customs and their combination. They also write that they printed in an orderly and continuous manner, as flipping through the pages sometimes results in a spoken interruption, and it is inappropriate to speak in the middle of the recital of the Tikkun. There is an approbation from Venice rabbis in the middle of the composition. Most of the leaves are surrounded by a border and printed in two columns with lines in between.

As is known, Kabbalists disagreed as to whether there should also be a recital of mishnahs in the Tikkun Leil Shavout service. The Ar"i held that only biblical verses should be recited, without mishnah, and the Shla"h later decided that mishnahs should also be recited. In this edition, which was printed several years after the Shla"h's passing, they made an interesting compromise and included only some of the mishnahs that are currently recited on Shavuot night. There are also differences in the recital of verses among the various customs; this is the first printed Tikkun which can be used to prove the original text. Extensive material about this topic is included.
