The Admor Rabbi Tzvi Hirsh of Riminov’s Personal Copy of Tractate Brachos (Slavita, 1817)

This Maseches Brachos, printed in early 19th century Slavita, was the personal gemara belonging to the Admor Harav Tzvi Hirsh Hakohein of Riminov and it was passed to his son and successor the Admor Harav Yosef Hakohein of Riminov.

Inscribed in bold on the top of the title page are the words “Property of the holy Rabbi M’ Tzvi Hirsh.”

The title page features the stamp of his son Harav Yosef Hakohein of Riminov, “Yosef Friedman” (Harav Yosef Hakohein of Riminov, who was raised in the home of Harav Yisrael of Ruzhin, adopted the last name Friedman). stamp with illustration of an eagle. 

There is also the signature of Rabbi Yaakov Avraham, a distinguished and wealthy figure in Riminov. (see story below)

The Admor Harav Tzvi Hirsh of Riminov (1778-1847) was one of the pious and preeminent early Chassidic masters. In his youth, he served as the personal attendant of the Admor Harav Menachem Mendel of Riminov, and would thus humbly refer to himself as “Tzvi Hirsh meshares, Tzvi Hirsh the servant.” He is famous for his exalted service of Hashem, and many of the renowned Chassidic leaders lingered in his presence to learn and emulate his sacred ways, among them the Bnei Yissachar and Divrei Chaim of Sanz.

After his passing, his widow married Harav Yisrael of Ruzhin, and their son Yosef (1843-1913) was raised in the home of his eminent stepfather. He subsequently was raised by the Ruzhiner’s son Harav Avraham Yaakov of Sadigura until he was crowned Admor of Riminov.

Harav Gershon Kamelar, veteran gabbai of the Admor Harav Tzvi Hirsh of Riminov related an awe-inspiring tale that offers a glimpse into the Rebbe’s supreme spiritual powers.

It was the month of Cheshvan 1846, and Rabbi Yaakov Avraham, a wealthy philanthropist in the town of Riminov had a new heater installed in his home. On the very first night that the heater was lit, he inhaled its toxic fumes, and the following morning they discovered him dead in his bed.

 Shocked and devastated, the widow ran to the home of the tzaddik of Riminov, and with tears she beseeched him to save her husband.

Harav Tzvi Hirsh instructed her to “quickly run and bring me 739 rubles, which is the numerical value of Yaakov ben Sarah, to distribute to the poor.” The woman immediately performed the Rebbe’s bidding and returned with the money.

 The Rebbe turned to her again. “Now go home and prepare your husband a cup of tea. Open his mouth and feed him the tea with a spoon.” The woman again did exactly as instructed, gently spoon feeding her husband. With the third teaspoon, Rabbi Yaakov Avraham opened his eyes, and slowly he regained his strength until he had fully recovered.
