"The Foundations of the Jewish National Fund" – Handmade Illustrated Book
"Yesodot Hakeren HaKayemet LeYisrael" [The Foundations of the Jewish National Fund] – handmade illustrated book. [Israel, late 1940 or early 1950s].
Handmade book – large leaves on which typewritten leaves were pasted, alongside newspaper clippings and color illustrations, dealing with the Jewish National Fund's history, its founders, its major activists and activities, and the philosophers whose ideas led to the fund's establishment.
Three chapters of the book, "The Establishment of the Jewish National Fund", "Dignitaries" and "The Activities of the Jewish National Fund", describe in a simple language meant for children the early Zionist philosophy of Moses Hess and Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Kalischer, the establishment of the Jewish National Fund by Zvi Herman Shapira, the involvement of Theodor Herzl, the work of Menachem Ussishkin for the Fund, the redemption of the land and the problem of land profiteering, the pioneering enterprise, the afforestation work of the Jewish National Fund, the Blue Box and fund raising in the Diaspora for the redemption of the land, and more. The title page of the book is decorated with JNF stamps. The color illustrations reflect in part the influence of the graphic language typical of contemporary JNF publications.
At the end of the book is an additional chapter, different in content and design, dedicated to a description of Jewish life in the Diaspora (titled "The Jewish Anomaly"). This chapter reviews Y.L. Pinsker's idea of auto-emancipation and deals, in a humorous manner, with the life of Jews in the Diaspora, using passages from the writings of Shalom Aleichem and Moyshe Nadir.
This item is possibly an outline for a future book; however, no books bearing this title are held in the NLI, and it seems that it was not published.
