Two Single Torah Finials – Burma and India
Two single Torah finials, each from a pair. Far East, [late 19th century].
Silver, cast, repoussé and engraved.
1. Iraqi-Jewish community of Rangoon, Burma (today Yangon, Myanmar), dedicatory inscription dated 5654 [1894]. Torah finial of Oriental (Mizrahi) type. Head in form of tapering dome, surmounted by ornament. Body pear-shaped, topped with decorated disk-like ornament, and with flattened sphere at bottom. Shaft diagonally truncated at bottom, so as to fit a typical Iraqi Torah case. Hebrew dedicatory inscription: "Wife of the dear wealthy one… Avraham Sisso, may the Lord maintain and protect him, in the month of Nissan 5654 [1894]." Height: 17 cm. No chains and bells.

2. India, [late 19th century]. Torah finial of Oriental (Mizrahi) type, stout and heavy. Head shaped like inverted calyx of flower, surmounted by tapering knop. Body pear-shaped, topped with two disk-like ornaments. Suspended from lower disk are chains with heavy, droplet-shaped ornaments at their ends that chime like bells. Stout shaft. Height: 20 cm.
