Two square amulet pendants, with clipped corners, surmounted by two suspension loops. [late 19th or early 20th century].
Silver, cast and engraved.
1. Women's amulet. Iraqi Kurdistan or Iran. Large pendant, engraved on both sides with holy names, names of angels, initials, and letter combinations. Also engraved on one side with name of amulet owner: "Farcha daughter of Miryam"; on other side, engraved with two squares with letters (kabbalistic "Magic Squares"), surmounted by dome. 8X8 cm. Missing pendants in bottom part. References: Jews of Kurdistan: Lifestyle, Tradition, and Art, pp. 179-81; Feuchtwanger Collection, item nos. 848-51.
2. Women's amulet. Iran-Kurdistan or Jerusalem. Engraved on both sides with holy names, names of angels, initials, and amuletic inscription warding off evil spirits, etc. Also engraved on both sides with images resembling leafy branches, and on one side with hand ("hamsa") symbol. Similar leafy-branch decorations appear on paper amulets for protection of the home from Syrian Kurdistan. See also item no. 145. 6X6 cm. Fractures, minor damage to edges.
