Two Silver Belt Buckles – Iraqi Kurdistan – II
Two belt buckles, possibly crafted by a Jewish silversmith. Kurdistan, most likely Iraqi Kurdistan (northern Iraq), [early 20th century].
Silver, repoussé, stamped and engraved; silver thread and granulation.
1. Consisting of two large parts shaped like droplets ("boteh" or paisleys), decorated with vegetal and geometric patterns. At center, dome-shaped ornament covering clasp, decorated with granulation, and set with light blue bead. Closed with hook. Silver marked. 32X11 cm. Traces of soldering (for pendants?) in lower part.
2. Consisting of two convex parts shaped like droplets. Each with a central dome-shaped ornament in silver thread and granulation and with small silver sphere on top. Margins with vegetal pattern. Covering clasp, cylindrical ornament decorated in silver thread and granulation, topped with silver cone shaped like flower bud. Tiny, sun-shaped decorations on back. Closed with hook. 25.5X9 cm.
