Hanukkah lamp. Sefrou, Morocco, [19th century].
Brass, cast.
Back plate: openwork, with row of four horseshoe arches at bottom, and additional horseshoe arch in center above this row. Projecting image of bird surmounts apex of suspension ring which in turn surmounts "window" in shape of four-petaled flower, situated above servant light attached to upper middle of back plate. Row of oil fonts consisting of four square pans, each with two pinched, pointed spouts for wicks (i.e., two lights per pan). Hebrew inscription (somewhat faded) on "windowsill" above oil fonts: "For the commandment is a lamp, and the law is light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life" (Proverbs 6:23). Hook – apparently for holding candlestick – attached with copper rivets to middle of lower back plate between two pairs of "windows" in row of horseshoe arches (please refer also to item no. 21).
Height: 22.5 cm. Width: 12.5 cm. Good condition.
