Seven Early Photographs of the Colony Rishon LeZion – The Guissine Brothers – Late 19th Century
Seven photographs from the early days of the colony of Rishon LeZion, presumably taken by the Guissine Brothers. [Ca. late 19th century].
1. Large photograph of the Rishon LeZion Winery. Dated and captioned in the plate (in Hebrew and French): "Water-cooling machine / 1897". Original mount of the Guissine Brothers' studio. This photograph was printed in the album "Views from Palestine and its Jewish Colonies" by Isaiah Raffalovich.
2-7. Six small photographs of Rishon LeZion, captioned in the plate in Hebrew and French: • "The Steam Mill in Rishon LeZion". • "[The Colony Committee] Rishon LeZion in 1898/1899". • "The Rishon LeZion Synagogue". • "The Physician and his Assistants in Rishon LeZion" • "Committee of the Rishon LeZion Library 1898/1899". • Interior of the Assembly Hall in Rishon LeZion".
The brothers Moshe Davidson and Aryeh Leib Guissine were among the first Jewish photographers in Palestine; they worked in Rishon LeZion ca. 1890-1910 in the studio "Ketav Or", which they established together. The Guissine Brothers documented life in the colony during its early years, the Baron's officials and the residents of the colony, in staged photographs taken in the studio and outside of it.
Among other things, they documented the wine production process at the Rishon LeZion winery in a series of photographs that were offered for sale in Jerusalem and Jaffa.
7 photographs. One photograph: 12X17 cm (on a 20X25 cm mount). Six photographs: approx. 11X18 cm. Condition varies. Stains on the large photograph's mount and on verso of the small photographs. Creases and some small holes and tears to small photographs, some of them reinforced with tape (small open tear, restored, to one of the photographs).
Provenance: The Rimon Family Collection.
