One of the first documents from the establishment of the Shas movement! - Signed by Chachmei HaTorah and some of its leading founders, negotiation with Agudas Yisroel. Jerusalem, Cheshvan 1983

The worldwide Shas movement was initially established as an organization and union of Sephardic Torah-observers in Jerusalem towards the municipal election that took place in late 1983. Its leading founders were the rabbis and activists Yaakov Cohen, Nissim Ze'ev and Shlomo Dayan.

The document before us contains discussions about the coalitional negotionation with Teddy Kollek, the old mayor of Jerusalem.

According to the agreement that was reached between the new party and Agudas Yisroel, from which the Shas Movement had split off, each of the parties was to negotiate on its own, yet the coalition agreement will be co-signed by both.

The document is signed by the greatest of Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah in its first year, during the first days of its formation: the Tzaddikim Geonim Rabbi Shabtai Atun and Rabbi Shalom Cohen today the president of Moetzes HaChachamim and the leader of the worldwide Shas movement.

It is also signed by the leading founders of Shas: Rabbi Yitzchak Peretz the Rav of Ra'anana, Rabbi Nissim Ze'ev, Rabbi Yaakov Yosef the son of Maran the Gaon Rabbi Ovadya Yosef and Rabbi Aryeh Deri, the future chairman of the movement

The letter was sent to the Agudas Yisroel party in Jerusalem with copies to Maran the Rosh Yeshiva the great Gaon Rabbi Elazar Menachem Mann Shach - HaRav Shach and to Rabbi Menachem Porush of Jerusalem.

[1] official stationery of 'Hitachdut HaSepharadim Shomrei Torah' (Union of Sephardic Torah-Observers), the first name of the Shas movement - before it was replaced by 'Hitachdut HaSepharadim HaOlamit - Shomrei Torah' (The Worldwide Union of Sephardim - Torah Observers).
