Manuscript of Refu’ot and Mazalot by Rabbi Shalom Shabazi. Teiz—Srav. Yemen 17th century.
Kitzur of medicines of the time, dealing with healing and the reasons for diseases and their roots. Tzimchi Merapeh. Stars and zodiac signs and their influence on man. Wriiting in Hebrew script, Arabic language. The manuscript before us has 87 pages and is missing the beginning and end. Page 7, column 2 opens with the “ElKhatab ElTanay” (second chapter) and ends with page 87. Not known the identity of the writer. But this writing seems to be from the Shabazi family, before Rabbi Shalom Shabazi. From pages 1-6 fill in Chapter 1 in the handwriting of Rabbi Shalom Shabazi. It is reminiscent of the handwriting of the Rashash, the Arabic doctor “Bakarat” who lived in the 11th century. The Rambam also mentions him in his book. On page 7, first column, are filled in sections from the Rashash’s book on the Torah, “Chemdat HaYamim” on parshat Toldot, Vayegash, Shmot, Va’eyra, and B’shalach. These additions aren’t paralleled in Chedmat HaYamim that are known today. This bage was written in crowded handwriting and according to the color of the ink it can be identified that it was written at a different time. On page 81 is a gloss handwritten by the Rashash, a calculation on the zodiac of Shvat. Throughout the book are glosses and corrections by previous owners. Rabbi Shalom Shabazi (Yemen, 1619-1720), known as the Abba Shalom Shabazi, was a sage and poet of Yemen and one of the great literary Hebrew and Jewish scolars of his time. He wrote Chemdat HaYamim on the kabbalah, a halakhic commentary on shechita and the Rambam, segulot, the Sefer HaMargalit, and Sefer HaKhol or Goral HaKhol. His book “Khattab Alzig” was in various manuscripts of sages of Yemen who lived after him, and it seems they copied it from the manuscript that is before us. Accompanied by an approval by Professor Aharon Gimni of Bar-Ilan University. In total, 13 pages of text in his handwriting and 161 in an unknown handwriting. Size: 20x14cm, old binding from the period. First page disconnected. Light moth damage. Stains from moisture. Tears on a number of pages. Generally good condition.
