Manuscript on Parchment. Germany. 14th-15th Century. Ashkenazi writing. Was Used as a Book Binding.

Very ancient leaf.

Copy page. A variety of Halachic Topics are copied on this manuscript. The author quotes words of the Rishonim, and mentions the source, including: Rashi from the 11-12th century and Rabbeinu Tam from the Ba’alei Hatosafot 12th century. The author frequently mentions the Ramam – likely referring to Rabbi Moshe MiKotzi who was also one of the Baalei Hatosafot, and authored Sefer Mitzvot HaGadol’.
This is a most interesting Halachic composition. Since its style differs to what we are accustomed to, we cannot be certain of the author’s name.
This page served as a binding for a book. It is well-known that the non-Jews used parchment of manuscripts as bindings, thereby saving themselves its cost. This actually resulting in many Rishonims’ unknown writings being preserved, albeit unintentionally!
See ‘The Perugia Genizah’ for details of non-Jews binding books using parchment of Jewish books. Printed 2008, Perugiah, Italy.
Size: 21x31.5cm.
