WAR-DATE PHOTOGRAPH OF SS WAR CRIMINAL WALTER REDER
Rare war-date photo of SS war criminal WALTER REDER (1915 - 1991), 6.75 x 9.25 in. color, showing him in uniform with another officer from the SS Division 'Totenkopf'. The verso bears the ownership stamp of the 'SS-Panzer-Granadier-Regiment 'Der Fuhrer', also black ink annotations (not in Reder's hand) indicating the photograph was taken in Munich in 1938 and issuing it the film number '3/2' and picture number '7'. Fine condition. Reder was an Austrian SS commander who served with the SS Division Totenkopf and the SS Division Reichsfuhrer-SS. He and the unit under his command committed the Marzabotto massacre in Italy in 1944. After the war, he was convicted of war crimes in Italy, including the Marzabotto massacre and murders at other villages near Bologna during so-called anti-partisan sweeps, and for ordering the execution of 2,700 Italian civilians in Tuscany and Emilia. War-date photographs of Reder are extremely rare!
