BANNED HOFFMANN PHOTOGRAPHS OF HERMANN GORING (3)
Lot of three press photographs of Hermann Goring, each 5 x 7 in. b/w, all credited to the studio of Heinrich Hoffmann. Each photo has been stamped 'GESPERRT' ('BLOCKED') on the verso, meaning it was not to be distributed nor published. It is easy to see why - two images show the obese Goring in side views as his clothes struggle to contain his enormous girth, the third image showing him walking beside Hitler as he smiles and rubs his hands with glee. According to our consignor, these photos were discovered at the courthouse in Nuremberg during the construction of the courtroom, by his father ROBERT G. STEPHENS, JR. (1913-2003). Stephens served on the staff of Robert H. Jackson, the U.S. Supreme Court Justice that served as the chief prosecutor for the United States during the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials. Stephens had lived in Germany prior to the outbreak of the war, and later served in the O.S.S. under William J. Donovan. All bear file holes at one edge, some bear marginal ink notes identifying the individuals pictured.
