Letter on Rabbinic Matters by the Gaon Rabbi Mordechai Gimpel Yaffe Av Beis Din of Rozhinai to His Son Rabbi Yaakov, Rozhinai, 1885.
The first part of the letter was written by the grandson of the Rav Rabbi Chaim Yaffe (Rabbi Yaakov's nephew who calls him My Uncle) and the second part - dealing with a rabbinic position he was offered was written by Rabbi Mordechai Gimpel. The two types of scripts in the two parts of the letter can be discerned.
The Gaon Rabbi Mordechai Gimpel Yaffe Rabinowitz (1820-1891) Av Beis Din of Rozhinai. One of the greatest rabbis of Lithuania in his generation. A disciple of Rabbi Yitzchak ben Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin author of Nefesh HaChaim. Did a lot of good work for Shivat Zion and even had close ties with Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Kalischer (a disicple of the Gaon Rabbi Akiva Eiger, the initiator of the polemic regarding sacrifices at this time) and Rabbi Shmuel Mohilever. At the end of his days, he immigrated to Israel and settled in Ekron. His son Rabbi Yaakov lived in Lutzin and was the Rav of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Hacohen Kook in his youth.
