* Techunat HaShamayim - astronomic work by Rabbi Rephael HaLevi. Amsterdam, 1756. First edition. Diagrams and tables. 

Before us is the first edition of the commentary Techunat HaShamayim about the paths of the stars, written in order to understand the Ramba"m's words in the halachahs of Kiddush HaChodesh, printed as well in several editions of Mishneh Torah L'HaRamba"m. There are tables on leaves 33-38, as well as many diagrams along the length of the book. As in most copies, there are [2] leaves lacking at the end of Kuntress Acharon by the publisher, which deals with a different topic. The copy before us also lacks leaf 38. Stefansky, Sifrei Yessod 515.

The author Rabbi Yisrael David Jaffe Margaliot Schlesinger [1802-1864] was a disciple of the Chatam Sofer and of other Hungarian rabbis. He battled "mechadshim, " and primarily battled changing customs that had been preserved in terms of synagogue structure and prayer order.
