Polemic Against Shabtai Tzvi and Jacob Frank Authored by R. Eliezer Fleckes, With Signature of R. Binyamin Wofle Lowe\Sha’arei Torah

Lengthy sermon delivered in Prague on the first day of Selichos 1799.

  • R. Eliezer Fleckes was one of the most distinguished students of the Noda B’Yehuda whom he quotes extensively in this sermon. He particularly complains and rails bitterly against the followers of Jacob Frank and their immoral behavior. Among his many interesting observations, he notes that since they like gematria, it is noteworthy that “Shabtai Tzvi” [814] is twice the gematria of the word “Arur” [p22b]. After the introduction, he prints a letter (dated 1792) from R. Naftali Hertz Wiesel citing R. Yonason Eibeschutz as saying that one is not required to believe everything quoted in the name of Kabbalah, thus supporting his opposition to the Frankists. On the title page there appears the signature of R. Binyamin Wolf Lowe, author the Sha’arei Torah and Rav of Verbau.
