Letter from Sir Moses Montefiore to the Rishon LeTziyon, the Gaon Rabbi Meir Panigel
Letter from Sir Moses Montefiore in his very advanced age to the geonim of Jerusalem, the Rishon LeTziyon, the gaon Rabbi Rephael Meir Panigel and another rabbi, whose name is blurred (possibly Rabbi Shmuel Salant, renowned rabbi of Jerusalem). Ramsgate, 1883.
The letter before us was written in Hebrew (by the secretary) on Montefiore's official Holy Land company stationery, and signed in English by Moshe Montefiore himself. The letter was written in Montefiore's very advanced age, which is evident in the form of his signature. The letter deals with a donation that Montefiore sent to the Sephardic communities in Jerusalem, and in the letter he specifies where to transfer the funds.
From the letter, we can see Sir Montefiore's righteousness and humility. Kings and world leaders sought him out, yet he expressed himself to the leaders of Jerusalem with much devotion, modesty and humbleness.
[1] leaf paper, approximately 13x19 cm. Ink on official stationery. Handwritten by the secretary and signed by Sir Moses Montefiore.
Very fine condition. Fold marks.
