Rare letter handwritten and signed by the Ga’avad of Chevin when he was in Tehran during the war. 1946

Letter by Rabbi Dov Berish Weidenfeld, Av Beit Din of Chevin, written from Tehran, Iran, after he fled there via the USSR after it became known among the Nazis that he was a “great among the Talmudists”. After several stops he finally reached Bukhara. Addressed to Rabbi Moshe Bernstein shlita of Beit Yitzhak. “I wanted to notify you that I came from Bukhara here to Tehran and I extend my welcome to you in the name of everyone in the yeshiva, and though it is superfluous to describe their virtue and goodness and talents - and I came only to rejoice his heart that his fruit will flourish there as well as Ilana Rabba ... Kol Torah knocks with all its might.” Later, he asks him to speak to his brother-in-law, Rabbi Reuven [Grozovsky?] from the United States, who will make sure to send to the rest of his brothers Shalom and Nahum certificates because their souls longed to see us soon ... For the sake of what is required for the desired purpose, and I will end with a drishat Shalom.”

At the end someone else joins the letter with one line “I join…to ask after his well-being…our friend Yitzhak Meir.” Light stains, overall good condition, 21.5x28cm.

Rabbi Dov Berish Weidenfeld (1881-1966) was the son of Rabbi Yaakov, the Kochav MiYaakov. He was a great posek of the last generations, known as the Shut Dovev Meisharim, and was a leader of the Council of Torah Sages. He established the Kochav MiYaakov yeshiva in Chevin and then in Jerusalem.

The recipient of the letter is probably Rabbi Moshe of Kamnitz, son of Rabbi Avraham Eliyahu, son-in-law of Rabbi Baruch Dov Leibowitz. He served as Ram in the Knesset Beit Yitzhak yeshiva in Kamnitz in 1930 and led the yeshiva when he father-in-law and brother-in-law (mentioned in the letter) were in America. He survived the Shoah and later was Ram at the Kamnitz yeshiva in Jerusalem.
