Page bearing the handwritten signature of the Chatam Sofer, Moshe Sofer of Frankfurt-am-Mein. Above the rabbi’s signature are two additional handwritten signatures in faded ink, and on the left is a handwritten note (perhaps the handwriting of the Chatam Sofer. 14.5x12cm.
About the Chatam Sofer’s handwriting: There is an accepted tradition in the name of Rabbi Mordechai Bennett of Nickelsburg, a contemporary of the rabbi’s generation and a friend of his, that he would review several times his halachic answers, not because he didn’t understand, but because looking at his handwriting was a segula for Yirat Shamayim. That tradition is also quoted in the name of the late Rabbi Yoel of Satmar and the late Rabbi Yosef Naftali Stern.
