Rabbi Shlomo Yosef Eliach (1960-1941) was a rabbi, Shadar, and a leading businessman in Israel. He was born into a long-time family of Chassidei Karlin and was the grandson of Rabbi Yitzhak, the brother of Rabbi Aharon HaGadol of Karlin. His other grandfather was Rabbi Shlomo Yosef (after whom he was named), who served as Rabbi of Stolin and immigrated to Tiberias, where he is buried. Rabbi Shlomo Yosef organized support among American Jewry for residents of the old Yishuv in Israel in the 19th century. He founded and managed the Beit HaTavshil in Jerusalem and Hevron. During his travels on behalf of the Yishuv he reached India and found that a severe disease was affecting the Jews there—he contacted Britain and made sure that medicine was brought for them. Beit HaTavshil was founded in 1920 in Me’ah She’arim, Jerusalem. It was maintained mostly by donations from the United States and provided cheap food for those in need, including Jewish prisoners. Rabbi Eliach continued to maintain the organization until he died at close to 80 years old. He is buried in Jerusalem.
