A Letter on Torah topics in the Handwriting of Rabbi Yisrael Ullman to his Brother Rabbi Ozer Ullman – Validity of the Corfu Etrog
A letter from Rabbi Yisrael Ullman, one of the greatest rabbis of Hungary and Galicia, the son of Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ullman from Grosswardein, the author of "Yeriot Shlomo", to his brother Rabbi Ozer. The content of the letter primarily deals with the topic of the validity of the Corfu Etrog, if it is permissible to bless over it. 1871.
In the past many people used the Corfu Etrog, which originate from Italy, Greece, Turkey and Sicily. The permission to use them on the Festival of Succot is usually accorded to the author of "Beit Ephraim". Over the years a doubt arose that perhaps these etrogim are grafted etrogim. Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor even published a book named "Tochachat Megula" in which he warns that it is forbidden to use this type of Etrog because they are grafted. Many rabbis joined his call, including Rabbi Shlomo Kluger and Rabbi Yisrael Salanter. Despite this, in the areas of Hungary and Galicia people kept to their previous tradition and blessed over the Corfu Etrog.
In the letter before us, Rabbi Yisrael Ullman explains at length why he himself blessed over the Corfu Etrog, despite the many doubts. Amongst other reasons because of "not to stray from the ways of our fathers" and also because "we did not hear from our father and teacher anything about this issue". In the letter many great scholars from that period are mentioned.
