Long, Handwritten & Autographed Halachic Responsa by Harav Yitzchak Weiss, Av Beis Din of Verbové, 1908

Handwritten, autographed halachic responsa and chiddushei Torah by Hagaon Harav Yitzchak Weiss Hy”d, Av Beis Din of Vrbové & Author of Siach Yitzchak.

Hagaon Harav Yitzchak Weiss, Av Beis Din of Carlsberg – Vrbové, Hy”d, (1873-1942) was a leading Hungarian sage. He was thoroughly-versed in the Revealed and Hidden Torah, and in his youth, was called “My Library” by the Shevet Sofer who attested to his disciple’s supreme knowledge and breadth in Torah.

The Minchas Elazar of Munkacz once remarked to a disciple of Hagaon Harav Yitzchak Weiss:
“Know that your master is one of the 36 tzaddikim upon whom the generation stands, and that your master is truly a library, versed in all realms of Shas, with Gemara, Rashi and Tosfos fluent on his lips.”

In 1903, he was appointed Av Beis Din of Carlsberg, and in 1906, Raavad of Vrbové. His famous works include Avnei Beis Hayotzer and Shu”t Siach Yitzchak. He perished al kiddush Hashem in the Lublin area on 26 Tammuz, 5702 (1942).

This responsa discusses various halachic issues and references the customs of the Chasam Sofer and Shevet Sofer.

Carlsberg, 1908. 3 sides Page size: 14x23 cm. Good condition. Apparently unpublished. In his letter, he notes that he did not keep a copy of this responsa.

With the Nazis’ entry into Vrbové, Hagaon Harav Yitzchak Weiss was carted away toward the Lublin region. At one station, all prisoners were ordered to disembark and transfer to a second train. The tzaddik held a briefcase containing his precious manuscripts, and as he alighted from the first train, the briefcase opened and his writings scattered. When he bent down to collect them, the Nazis began beating him ruthlessly. Turning to his fellow Jews, he beseeched, “Kinderlach, ich beit ayech! Lozt druken meine ksavim! ‘Dear Jewish children! Please have mercy on me and print my writings!”
