Circular Letter by the Jewish Council which acted against the intention to change the Gregorian calendar by adding an "unnamed" day once a year. For example, once a year, after Shabbat, an unnamed day will be added and only after it will be Sunday.
Economic circles in the USA proposed the change in 1923 before the League of Nations in Geneva. Such a proposal could have led to confusion regarding the Sabbath, since the Sabbath would have wandered from one day of the week to another; sometimes it would indeed occur on Sabbath. At other times, however, it might occur on Sunday or Monday…!
When the committee on behalf of the League of Nations started discussing the proposal, it was clear to the Jewry of the world that it must fight against the proposed change for the sake of the Sabbath.
The Chief Rabbis of the large states and well-known public personalities took on this role.
In 1925, a delegation composed of Rabbi Yosef Zvi Hertz, the Chief Rabbi of England, Rabbi Yisrael Levi (the Chief Rabbi of France), Rabbi Yesha'aya First of Vienna, Rabbi Dr. Tuviya Lowenstein (the chief secretary of the Jewish Council) of Zurich and Lucian Wolf, the well-known Jewish-British historian and writer, appeared before the League of Nations.
The booklet before us contains the translation of the speeches the members of the delegation gave and which thanks to them, the proposed change was rejected.
At the end of the booklet, there is an example of a "form for signing in your name". The Jewish public was asked to sign such a form, stating that "a change in the Gregorian calendar … will cause material and moral damage to the Jewish citizens of our country".
Interesting, important item!
