Reb Shmuel Gedalya and Reb Leib – The Greatest Horse Breeders in Poland – Amazing Photographs and Large, Illustrated Certificate of Appreciation – Extremely Rare
Shmuel Gedalya Lindenbaum and his son Leib, residents of Lublin, bred horses and sold them, among others, to the Polish army. An interesting fact demonstrated by the items before us is that the horses bred by Jews were considered the finest horses, the most appropriate for the Polish army.
Those days, refined horses cost a fortune and were a symbol of high social status, ridden by kings and earls. The European armies also sought the best horses and these could be found with Jewish horse breeders.
Before us is a certificate of appreciation that was given to Shmuel Gedalya and his son Leib Lindenbaum of Lublin for their expertise in breeding horses for the military cavaliers (of the Polish army). The certificate states that during the years 1922 and 1933 they had sent the finest horses to a special committee to be examined. The certificate is decorated with illustrations of horses. Signatures (most likely of military persons). Lublin 1923.
40x55 cm.
In addition, impressive photographs of horses, Lindenbaum, and officers of the Polish army:
A. Photograph of officers of the Polish army beside a horse. 17.5x23.5 cm. Glued on cardboard.
B. 2 photographs of soldiers and a horse, the stables of the horse breeders, Lublin, Poland. Stamp of the photographer's studio. 17.5x23.5 cm.
C. Photographs of Lindenbaum, officers and citizens beside horses. Varying sizes: 17x23.5 cm. 23x29 cm. 23x28 cm. The photographs are glued on cardboard. Stamp of the photographer's studio and Polish inscription above and under the photographs. Lublin 1924.
Rare and interesting!
