Various early stamps appear on the book, in Cyrillic letters, of the Jewish community of Harbin, China. On the inner cover there is a stamp in Hebrew "Kehilat Yehudei Harbin" (Jewish Community of Harbin).
Jews settled in Harbin since 1898. The Jewish community increased in number in 1905 from 500 citizens to 8,000 after many Jewish refugees who escaped Russia settled there.
The flow of refugees to the city continued until after the Bolshevik Revolution. The Jews lived peacefully beside their non-Jewish neighbors. The Jews' capital led Harbin to be a prosperous urban center with Jewish institutions and newspapers in Russian.
