Bat Yisrael Be'Galut Bavel (Daughter of Israel in the Exile of Babylon) – Special Piyut (Liturgical Poem) – Italy, the Beginning of the 19th Century – Most Rare
A page on which is printed the Piyut Bat Yisrael Be'Galut Bavel (Daughter of Israel in the Exile of Babylon). Most likely printed in Italy at the beginning of the 19th century.
The poet is a gentile! – Ephrem the Syrian, the greatest Syrian Christian hymnographer who lived in the fourth century. The Piyut was originally written in Italian. It was translated into Hebrew at the beginning of the 19th century. See "Kochvei Yitzchak" by Mendel Stern, 1848, p. 59.
A (printed) signature appears at the margins of the page: "Ma'ase Be'Talmid Echad Ve'Hu Pil'I" – the name of the Jewish translator Angelo Paggi of Florence (1789-1867), who translated the Piyut with his foreign student, is probably implied here.
Most rare! Does not appear in libraries in Israel and is not bibliographically registered. It was most likely printed only once, in the above book.
Condition: Very Good. Fancy, decorated page. Wear and tear at the margins of the page. Folding marks. Slight slits. Handwritten inscription of a library.
