Bartlett was an English painter who travelled extensively all over the world and painted. He wrote down his impressions in travel books and they are amongst the most popular books in the genre. His paintings bring the landscape of Israel in the 19th century to life, and Jerusalem and Israel have an important place in his books.
Bartlett arrived in Israel for the first time in 1842 and put most of his efforts into drawing the views of Jerusalem. The results of his work were published in his book "Walks About the City and Environs of Jerusalem" which was first published in 1844. In 1853 Bartlett visited Israel again. On his way back to England, on the high seas, he became ill and died.
